Setting Step Height

Step one in building steps for a patio is setting the heights. We recommend setting the height of the landing no more than 5 inches below your door, as this provides a comfortable and safe transition from your home to the patio. This height minimizes the risk of feeling like you might fall when stepping out.

Proper height determination ensures both safety and aesthetics. Masonry steps can typically be built with either 6-inch or 8-inch risers. Ultimately, your new steps will enhance your home’s entryway and provide a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Excavation Phase: Footing

Now that we have determined the heights, we can begin digging the footing. We construct all our steps with a concrete footing mixed on-site. The depth of the footing depends on the height of the stoop and can range from 12 inches to as deep as 36 inches.

Installing Caps & Paver Landing

We start by installing the coping and then move on to the paver landing. The coping is securely glued to the block with masonry glue, and we finish the landing with polymeric sand. For most landings, we recommend leaving at least 3 feet from your door, especially if it swings on a hinge instead of sliding. You have lots of options for your stoop’s materials, like block, cinder block with a stone veneer, or even wood. Adding some lighting to your stoop is a fantastic idea—it not only looks great but also makes it safer to use at night. Just remember, it’s best to decide on the lighting before we start the project, as it’s tricky to add it in later.
